Major Fighters in UFC 318
Max Holloway
Max Holloway is a UFC legend, winning the featherweight title back in 2016 and going on to make 4 defences before losing to Alexander Volkanovski. Interestingly, his first-ever fight in the UFC was against Poirier. He lost by triangle armbar, which remains the only submission loss in his 26-8 professional record. He briefly moved up to lightweight in 2019, losing a unanimous decision against Poirier, but returned in 2024, beating Justin Gaethje to win the BMF belt with one of the greatest KO’s in UFC history.
Dustin Poirier
Dustin Poirier has had a similarly long and impressive career in the UFC. He entered the promotion in 2011, starting out at featherweight and going 8-3 before moving to lightweight. He’s defeated some of the division’s biggest names, including Justin Gaethje, Conor McGregor, Eddie Alvarez, Dan Hooker and Michael Chandler. Although he won the interim title, he lost all three of his undisputed lightweight title challenges. Overall, he’s now 30-9 in his career, and this could be his retirement fight.
Marvin Vettori
Vettori previously went on a 5-fight win streak through the middleweight division before losing to Israel Adesanya in 2021. Since then, he’s won 2 and lost 3 fights, bringing his UFC record to 9-6 and his overall record to 19-7-1. Vettori is renowned for his toughness, and he’s notoriously difficult to finish, having never been stopped in a professional fight.
Brendan Allen
At one point, Allen looked like he might be the future of the middleweight division. He went on a 7-fight win streak in the UFC, which included 5 rear-naked choke submission wins. However, he’s now lost his last two fights, against Nassourdine Imavov and Anthony Hernandez. He still has the potential to be a title contender, but he’ll need to get back into the win column and climb the rankings once more.
These two legendary fighters have met on two previous occasions. The first time was more or less at the beginning of both of their UFC careers. Holloway was just 21 then, and making his UFC debut. The second fight was his first fight in the lightweight division, and one he took on relatively short notice. Holloway recently showed his potential in the division, scoring an impressive KO over former title challenger Gaethje.
Poirier has hinted at his upcoming retirement in recent years, and it seems this could be his last ever fight. He’s been one of the best fighters the lightweight division has seen, even if he’s never held the undisputed title. He’ll now have a chance to win the BMF belt before riding off into the sunset. The UFC odds between the two are more or less even, although Holloway is the slight favourite.
Vettori seems to have hit a bit of a ceiling in his UFC career, winning just twice in the four years following his championship fight. His main attribute is his toughness, which is a good trait to have, but not something that can be relied on to win fights at the highest level. He looked slow and ineffective in his last fight as he was beaten by Roman Dolidze.
It’s possible that Brendan Allen is at a turning point in his career. Despite his title aspirations, he’s had to rethink his strategy after losing two in a row. Vettori has never been submitted, but Allen could make a serious statement if he manages it. He’s currently the moderate favorite according to the latest MMA odds.
