The UEFA Europa League is an exciting club soccer competition featuring some of the best teams from across Europe. It takes place every season, and besides giving teams a chance to win silverware, it also opens up qualification for the Champions League the following season. Find out how to watch every game and bet on the soccer action here at Stake sportsbook .

What is the Europa League?

The Europa League is a continental soccer tournament featuring 76 teams from UEFA member associations, with qualification coming from a combination of domestic league position and performance in qualifying rounds.

After initial qualifying and playoffs, teams compete in a league before the top-finishing clubs progress to the knockout stages. Winners receive an automatic place in next season’s Champions League, regardless of their final league position. While it may not be the premier European soccer competition, it still features some of the continent’s best sides and top players.

History of the Europa League

The Europa League was established in 1971 as the UEFA Cup. UEAFA created it to replace the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and would later merge with the UEFA Cup Winners Cup and UEFA Intertoto Cup before rebranding in 1999 as the Europa League. The changes saw the sports competition expanded to include more teams. Originally using a group stage format, the 2024-25 season now features 36 teams taking part in a league before the knockout rounds.

Which Teams Play in the Europa League?

Roma

Roma are a hugely historic club but have never won the Europa League, although they have finished as runners-up on three separate occasions. The most recent time they reached the Europa League final was the 2022-23 season.

Manchester United

Manchester United is the English team with the most success in their domestic league, having won 13 titles. They have 3 Champions League titles and one Europa League title.

Porto

Porto is the most successful Portuguese team in intercontinental club competitions, having won both the Champions League and Europa League twice.

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur have won the Europa League twice in their history, in 1971-72 and 1983-84, back when it was called the UEFA Cup. They haven’t won a trophy in domestic or continental soccer since 2008, despite reaching the Champions League final in 2018-19.

Eintracht Frankfurt

Frankfurt finished runners-up in the 1959-60 Champions League competition but won the Europa League in 1980 and 2022. Their most recent Europa League win ended a trophy drought of 42 years.

Lazio

The Italian side has never won the Europa League but did win both the UEFA Cup Winners Cup and the UEFA Super Cup in 1999.

Real Sociedad

Spanish teams are the most successful in the Europa League, with a total of 14 wins. However, Real Sociedad have never been to a European final.

Format & Schedule of the 2024-25 Europa League

The Europa League features teams from leagues all over Europe, with most teams qualifying based on their domestic league position the previous season. However, some teams will also have to play in the qualifying rounds to earn a chance to compete.

There are 3 qualifying stages, culminating in a play-off round that will eventually see 36 teams entering a league. This will be inaugural season for the current format, with a league stage that replaces the group stages used in previous seasons.

During the league stage, each team will play 8 different teams, with 4 home fixtures and 4 away. The top 8 teams will automatically progress to the next stage, while places 9 to 24 compete in the playoffs. Ultimate, 16 teams will enter the knockout round.

As in other European competitions, teams play a home and away fixture against their opponent during the knockout stages. The aggregate score determines which club goes through. This stage culminates in the final, which is held at the San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao, Spain.

Europa League Betting Odds & Payouts

If you’re betting on the Europa League, you need to be able to look at the odds and work out your potential payouts. There are 3 main ways to view the odds at Stake:

  • Decimal: Decimal odds show you how much your bet would pay if it wins. All you have to do is multiply your stake by the number. So if you were to bet $10 at odds of 2.50, you’d receive $25 if it wins. That’s $15 profit and $10 of your original stake.

  • Fractional: Fractions always feature a numerator, which is on the left and the denominator, which is on the right. To work out your profit, simply multiply the numerator by your stake and then divide the result by the denominator. If you bet $10 at odds of 7/2, you’d win $35 if it wins, and also get your stake back.

  • American: These odds use either a - or + sign. Odds with a - sign tell you how much you’d need to bet to win $100 in profit. On the other hand, the + odds show you what you’d win if you placed a $100 bet and it wins. For example, if you bet $10 on +500 odds, you’d win $50 profit.
