Though Copa Sudamericana used to be a straight knockout competition, it changed in recent years to incorporate multiple stages. The first stage is played over two legs before the group stage, in which each team plays six matches between April and June.
The knockout playoff round is held over two legs in July, before the round of 16 and quarter-finals in August. The semi-finals take place over two legs in September and October before the final on October 28. This year’s final will be held at the 60,235-capacity Estadio Centenario in Uruguay.
