Major Fighters in UFC Fight Night 247: Magny vs. Prates
Neil Magny
Magny has earned a reputation as a gatekeeper of the welterweight division, maintaining his spot in the top rankings over the years and testing the ability of up-and-coming fighters. His 29-12 professional record includes 22 wins in the UFC, and his losses have mostly come in fights against top opposition. In his last five fights, he has lost to Gilbert Burns, Ian Garry and Michael Morales while beating Phil Rowe and Mike Mallot.
Carlos Prates
Prates looks like a legit prospect and has won a performance of the night bonus in all three of his UFC fights so far. His 20-6 record includes a win over lightweight contender Charles Oliveira outside of the UFC, and he’s currently on a 10-fight winning streak in MMA. He’s finished all of his opponents in the Contender Series and UFC, including his most recent win over Jingliang Li.
Cody Garbrandt
Garbrandt went undefeated on his run to the bantamweight title, beating Dominic Cruz in an impressive performance back in 2016. Since then, he suffered successive losses to TJ Dillashaw and had a brief but unsuccessful period at flyweight. Most recently, he was submitted by former flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo. He hopes to reverse his fortunes with a win and climb up the bantamweight division rankings once more.
Miles Johns
Johns has an impressive record of 15-2, with six wins in the UFC since he first fought in the promotion back in 2019. He’s also picked up two Performance of the Night bonuses with stoppages over Kevin Natividad and Anderson Dos Santos. Although he has two losses, they both came in the UFC against quality opposition, and he’s been improving in almost every fight.
Magny’s only losses in the UFC have come against top opposition, and he’s a good test for any fighter who wants to break into the top of the division and fight for the title. While he’s not getting any younger, he still presents a strong challenge for an upcoming prospect, and his experience and durability make it tough to beat.
Magny’s last loss was against the impressive prospect Morales, and now he’ll face another rising star, Carlos Prates. The Brazilian fighter currently looks unstoppable and has finished every opponent he’s faced in the UFC. As a result, he’s the current UFC betting favourite for this fight.
Garbrandt really fell off after his title win, getting knocked out in the first round three fights in a row. Thankfully, he seems to have fixed the defensive holes in his game, but his durability is still questionable. He has fast hands but could get knocked out if he gets drawn into exchanges.
Miles Johns is a decent fighter, and although he likely won’t be fighting for the title anytime soon, he has enough to give Garbrandt real problems in this fight. The MMA odds show he’s the slight favourite, but Johns is far better than Cody’s recent wins.
