Dota 2 EWC 2026 format and tournament structure
24 teams take part in the Dota 2 tournament at the Esports World Cup, competing for a share of the $2 million prize pool. It’s split into 3 separate stages. The group stage gets things underway and is followed by the survival stage, where teams have a second chance to make the playoffs.
The playoffs follow the opening 2 stages, with winning teams advancing to the Grand Final to decide the world champions.
By performing well in tournaments at the Esports World Cup, teams also earn points. These points are accumulated across different tournaments, with the most successful team winning the Club Championship. Our Esports World Cup picks blog has expert opinions and analysis of all the action throughout the tournament.
Group stage round-robin and Bo2 format
The 24 teams taking part in the Dota 2 EWC are divided into 4 groups of 6 teams. Each group follows a round-robin format, in which teams play a best-of-2-game series against every other team in their group.
The best-of-2 series works by using a point system to assign points for wins, draws, or losses. A team winning the series 2-0 gets 3 points, teams playing a 1-1 tie get 1 point each, while teams that lose 0-2 get 0 points.
The top team from each group advances automatically to the playoffs. However, it’s not over for the other teams. All the teams in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place qualify for the survival stage, while the others are eliminated from the tournament. Bear this in mind when choosing your outright and “to qualify” bets.
Survival stage and how teams qualify for playoffs
The survival stage features the 2nd, 3rd and 4th place teams from each group, totalling 12 teams. This is a single-elimination bracket to determine which 4 teams will advance to the playoffs.
The 4th-placed teams play the 3rd-placed teams, and the winners then face the 2nd-placed teams. All matches in this stage are played to the best of 3 games.
Playoffs bracket and grand final
8 teams enter the single-elimination playoffs bracket. Like the survival stage, matches here are played to the best of 3 games. However, the final two teams will play a best-of-five series in the Grand Final.

Dota 2 EWC 2026 betting markets available at Stake
There are lots of different Dota 2 betting markets available on the 2026 EWC at Stake. During the group stage, matches are played to the best of 2 games, which can result in ties. As a result, the match winner bet is a threeway market. You can bet on either side to win, or bet on the tie. During the survival and playoff stage, matches are played to the best of 3 games, so the match winner is two way. This is like a moneyline bet, where you simply select the team you think will win.
Outside of the match winner market, you can also bet on map winners. For example, you can pick which team you think will win the first map of the match. Map handicap betting is also available. The Dota 2 betting odds on handicaps work the same as for other sports. Each team has a map handicap or advantage applied. For example, if the team is +1.5, they need to avoid losing by 2 maps for your bet to win.
Stake covers Esports World Cup Dota 2 outright betting markets too. These let you predict which team will win the tournament and be declared world champions. What’s more, there are also prop bets available, such as first blood or first Roshan.

Team Spirit's title defence and key contenders to know
Esports World Cup 2025 Dota 2 winner Team Spirit return to defend their title this summer. As the current champions, they were directly invited to the EWC, but Team Spirit haven’t won a tournament since their success last year. They finished runners-up at PGL Wallachia Season 6 and DreamLeague Season 27 in 2025. This year, their best result was a 3rd place finish at DreamLeague Season 29.
PARIVISION are currently joint favourites to win EWC 2026 according to the opening betting odds.
