What is Ligue 1?
Ligue 1 is the top division of French soccer and is one of the highest-ranked European football leagues. In terms of the UEFA coefficient ranking, it’s fifth behind the Premier League, Serie A, La Liga and the Bundesliga. Ligue 1 has a rich history, and many of the world's best players have plied their trade for teams like Paris Saint-Germain, Olympique de Marseille, and Lyon over the years.
Ligue 1 teams have a chance to qualify for major European competitions such as the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and the Conference League. In addition, they can participate in domestic cup competitions such as the Coupe de France and Trophée des Champions.
History of Ligue 1
The National Council of the French Football Federation voted in favour of professionalism in 1930, paving the way for the modern Ligue 1 to develop. The 1932-33 season was France’s inaugural all-professional soccer league, but it wasn’t until 2002 that Ligue 1 was created in its current guise.
Since it was founded, there have been a total of 75 clubs taking part in Ligue 1. Today, Montpellier, Nice, Marseille and Rennes are the only founding clubs to still play in the competition.
Paris Saint-Germain are the most successful team in Ligue 1 history, with 14 titles. In 2025, PSG became only the second Ligue 1 club after Marseille to win the Champions League and in 2026, they became the first Ligue 1 side to win multiple Champions League titles.
Format and schedule of the 2026-27 Ligue 1
Ligue 1 features 18 teams that compete in a round-robin league. Each team plays every other team in the league twice, once at home and once away. A win earns three points, while one point is earned by drawing a game, and a loss earns none.
At the end of the season, the team with the most points is crowned champion, while the bottom two teams are automatically relegated. The 16th-placed team plays in the two-legged relegation playoffs with the promotion playoff winner of Ligue 2. The winner of the two-legged tie plays in Ligue 1 the following season. If points are tied between any teams, goal difference and then goals scored are used to determine league standings.
When does the 2026-27 Ligue 1 season start?
The Ligue 1 2026/27 season begins on 21 August 2026 and concludes on 29 May 2027. During the winter, teams take a short break. This lasts from 12 December 2026 to 2 January 2027.
Ligue 1 relegation odds
Each season, 2 Ligue 1 teams are automatically relegated, while a 3rd plays in the relegation playoff against the Ligue 2 promotion playoff winner. At the start of the season, newly promoted sides Le Mans and Troyes are favourites to be relegated this season. However, Ligue 1 relegation odds also suggest Angers, Le Havre, Stade Brest and Paris FC are expected to struggle.
Ligue 1 title and top scorer odds
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have won 5 titles in a row and have won 12 of the last 14 Ligue 1 seasons. As a result, it’s no surprise to see that they’re currently the betting favourite to win the 2026/27 Ligue 1 title. Ligue 1 winner odds have them as heavy favourites as the outright winner, ahead of Marseille, Monaco and Lens.
However, you can also bet on the Ligue 1 title without PSG. The race for second place and European positions is a little more exciting, with Lille, Lyon and Stade Rennais all having an outside chance according to the Ligue 1 odds.

Ousmane Dembele won the Ligue 1 player of the year award last season, and the PSG player is currently the betting favourite to score the most goals in 2026/27.
Last season’s top scorer, Estéban Lepaul, is the 2nd favourite according to the opening betting odds. The Rennes striker scored 21 Ligue 1 goals in 2025/26, compared with 10 for Dembélé.

Promotions and relegations
Following the 2025/26 season, Troyes and Le Mans were promoted to Ligue 1. They replaced Metz and Nantes, which were relegated to Ligue 2.
Troyes won Ligue 2 last season, returning to the top flight of French football following a 3-year absence. On the other hand, Le Mans achieved back-to-back promotions through the divisions of French football over the past few years. They’ll now play in Ligue 1 for the first time in 17 years.
