Major Fighters in UFC Fight Night Machado Garry vs Prates
Ian Machdo Garry
After taking his first professional loss in his last fight, Ian Garry is back to take on a new challenge. He’s now 15-1 in his MMA career, with his only loss coming against title contender Shavkat Rakhmonov. The former Cage Warriors champion has recent wins against Michael Page, Geoff Neal and Neil Magny, but he needs a win to get back into the title picture. This will be Garry’s first fight of the year.
Carlos Prates
Prates has been on an extremely impressive run since arriving in the UFC from the Contender Series in 2024. In 4 UFC fights, he has finished every opponent, picking up 4 performance of the night bonuses for his troubles. His striking is high level, and he has the kind of finishing ability that could make him a star. His last win was a round 1 knockout against Neil Magny, and his professional MMA record is now 21-6.
Anthony Smith
Smith surprised quite a few fans by taking another fight after he seemingly retired after his last loss. The veteran light heavyweight has 2 losses in his last 3 fights and just 2 wins in his last 5 fights. Mentally, he wasn’t in a good place the last time he entered the cage, and some fans are concerned about him. He has an overall record of 37-21, with 13-11 in the UFC.
Zhang Mingyang
Mingyang is an interesting prospect who joined the UFC in 2023. Since then, he has had just 2 fights, but he’s finished both opponents in impressive fashion. He won a performance of the night bonus against Ozzy Dias in his last fight thanks to a round 1 stoppage, mirroring his performance against Brendson Ribeiro in his debut fight. His professional MMA record is now 18-6, and if he can continue his streak, he could be getting a push for the title shot in the near future.
The MMA odds are very close in this matchup. Right now, Garry is the slight favourite, but that could change closer to the fight. Garry is probably the more well-rounded fighter, as he displayed excellent grappling ability in his fight against Page and trains with former UFC lightweight interim champion Charles Oliveira.
Prates has looked very impressive so far in his UFC career, but he’s only 4 fights in. He hasn’t faced the level of competition that Garry offers yet, so this will be a big test for him. If he can keep it standing, he likely has an advantage, but it will be a very interesting battle between two excellent strikers.
Smith has looked bad in his last few fights, and most fans expected him to retire. However, many MMA fighters find it difficult to hang up the gloves, and it must be difficult to go out on a loss. He’s entering the octagon as a significant betting underdog, although he upset the MMA betting odds when he faced upcoming prospect Vitor Petrino last year.
Zhang has looked very promising, but he’s only 2 fights into his UFC career and is definitely still rough around the edges. His main attributes are his striking ability and power, and the UFC odds show he should be able to finish Smith. However, there’s always a chance that the experienced veteran could surprise everyone.
