Golfers in St Andrews adapted and progressed the game from rules obtained from “the gentlemen of Leith”, who had established their own members' club in 1744. Subsequently, the world’s first official golf course was constructed at St Andrews in 1764, and King William IV honoured the club with the title “Royal and Ancient,” which is still known today.
In the early days of golf in Scotland, players used hand-crafted wooden clubs and balls made of feathers wrapped in a stitched horse hide. Golf soon crossed the border from Scotland to England, and the first course outside Scotland was Royal Blackheath on the outskirts of London. As the British Empire expanded, colonialists took golf with them.
The first golf course outside of the British Isles was established in Bangalore, India, with others quickly following in Ireland, Canada, South Africa, the United States, and Hong Kong.
The pioneers of golf in Britain were the likes of Tom Morris and Willie Park, two men synonymous with the progression and development of the game and its associated equipment. However, the establishment of the United States Golf Association in 1894 brought about a mass interest in golf, and people throughout the United States became interested in the game for the first time.
Today, the American-based PGA Tour is widely seen as the pinnacle of the sport, with most of the world’s best players competing on the Tour each week. However, the emergence of the Saudi-funded LIV Golf Tour has provided professionals with an alternative tour with big purses. It promises to change the golf hierarchy in years to come.
Rules of Golf
Golf is a relatively complex game with extensive rules and regulations. That said, you can easily grasp the basic rules of golf if you wish to tune into the game and place bets on the big tournaments at Stake.com.
Fundamentally, golf is an individual sport in which players compete against other players in the field. It’s unique in that the player with the lowest - not the highest - score at the end of a round wins.

Most golf tournaments follow this method - known as stroke play - and consist of 3-4 rounds, meaning that a player’s total score over the 3-4 rounds will be added up. Ultimately, the winner will have the lowest score over the 3-4 rounds.
Some golf tournaments follow a match-play format, in which players seek to beat their competitors on each individual hole, as opposed to stroke play, where every shot matters.
